Hopefully, any questions you may have will be answered in program summary below. Please feel free to contact me with any further questions you may have about this division.
Special Notes to Parents:
1) All children are welcome to join with no previous skating experience.

Initiation Program:
This program is designed for beginners ranging in age from four to eight years. They progress at different rates. The emphasis is on enjoyment and skills acquisition.
The main objectives are to HAVE FUN, stimulate an interest in hockey and a desire to continue participation, DEVELOP BASIC HOCKEY SKILLS, obtain a sense of achievement, promote physical fitness, introduce players to the concepts of co-operation, sportsmanship, leadership, encourage initiative, and prepare players for further participation in Kamloops Minor Hockey Programs.
** Hockey Canada developed the Initiation Program to make children’s first contact with hockey a safe and positive experience. It’s a structured, learn to play hockey program designed to introduce beginners to the game’s basic skills.

KMHA will supply each team with socks at the beginning of every year. These socks are included within a player’s registration. The socks are to be kept by the players at the end of the season.
Goalie gear is given out to each team in Div. B , C & D to be shared by the whole team. It is to be handed in to the Equipment Director with the jerseys at the end of the season.
Player Movement:
Any player movement between teams for parity, is at the discretion of the Division Director and the 3rd Vice President. Player movement between divisions occurs only at the discretion of the Division Director and 3rd Vice along with consultation with the player’s parent(s) prior to decision to move the player. Movement between divisions is limited only to moving down a division due to skill of players and is only done with extreme consideration. The best time to have player movement is early in the session. All movement must be done by November 15th.
Player Pick-up:
Any player additions (player pick-ups) for out of town play must be approved by Division Director. Each player may only be picked up once during the season.
Team Selections:
Division Director formulates equally balanced teams.
Teams and coaches are matched dependent where coach’s child is evaluated. Some fine-tuning may be required or specific requests may be made at the discretion of the Director.
Initiation “C” shall do skill and game evaluations and use these results to help with the formulating of balanced teams.
Pond Hockey:
Cross-ice ½ ice scrimmages or ¾ ice scrimmages. Low organization, no fixed amount of players, no positional play, multiple pucks, emphasis – FUN.
¾ Ice Slots:
(3) teams on the ice at one time. (2) teams in controlled scrimmage from blue line to far end, while (1) team working on applicable IP skills from the same blue line to nearest goal line. Hence ¾ ice slot. Teams rotate from game station to skill station on fixed time intervals. The intent is to have all players on the ice at all times.
Coaches: Initiation Coaches / Instructors/ Directors must have taken the Speak Out Program or complete the new online course - Respect in Sport and it is recommended that each be certified by taking the BCAHA eight (8) hour Initiation Program Instruction course offered by KMHA, and must have a Criminal Record Check done (thru KMHA) annually.
** Anyone who is interested in being a coach, assistant coach or manager during the season, needs to fill out ‘Coaches Application Form’ and forward it to the KMHA office. Our Administrator will forward these applications thru to the directors. ** Please try to hand your application(s) in as soon as possible. Directors would like to have a coaches meeting with coaches before the player’s first ice time.
A) Recreational coaches shall insist on discipline both on and off the ice, team play, skill development, total effort, sportsmanship and fair play towards competitors from their players at all times.
B) Recreational coaches shall be responsible for discipline of players not only on the ice, but at all times players are under their charge including attendance in arenas, dressing rooms, vehicles, buses and all other public places while traveling as a team.
C) (1) Recreational coaches shall not themselves, nor shall they permit: - The illegal consumption of drugs or alcohol. - The use of tobacco products in the dressing rooms or on the bench. - Swearing in dressing rooms or on the bench. - Abuse of referees and officials for any reason. - Harassment and abuse of players by each other.
(2) Recreational coaches should insist upon and enforce the same discipline guidelines with respect to their assistant coaches and team managers.
D) Coaches shall see that all team players receive fair and equal ice time.
Concession:
Each team is responsible for having a parent working in the concession during ice times. (Exception – Ice Box and ISC)
The concessions are leased from the City of Kamloops, by way of a percentage of our sales. We make our profits from the concessions being open by parents, like yourself while your child is on the ice.
Directors are to make sure that teams have (2) people working in concession at all games, including tournaments, and as many practice times as possible. This would go a long way in alleviating possible theft of money and missing product. Having (2) persons in the concession at all times is a protection for us all.
Parents:
Parents and spectators at KMHA games and functions are responsible for their own conduct. They must endeavor to NOT exhibit any disorderly conduct before, during, or after any hockey practices or games involving Kamloops Minor Hockey Association teams.
How a player gets that first taste of hockey is crucial.
If the beginner has fun, developing some basic skills and
building confidence, there is a good chance that player will
go on to enjoy hockey for many years.
But if a beginner has an unhappy, unrewarding experience,
the chances are that he, or she, will quit at an early age and
never discover the real joy of Canada's great game.
Every hockey beginner should have access to the Initiation Program!
